What is the Proper Ball Position with Irons?

From a 9 iron to a 3 iron, should the ball be played in a different position? That’s Mark’s question to Maria Palozola of MyGolfInstructor.com. Maria explains that years ago a progressive ball position was often taught as equipment and swing styles were very different. However, nowadays you will find pro golfers being more consistent with where they place the ball. She explains that the idea is to trap all of your irons in the same place and at the bottom of your swing arc.

If you have a proper weight shift (towards the target) then you will bottom out about one ball forward of center. Maria instructs her students to play their pitching wedge up through their 5 iron one ball forward of center. For longer irons, hybrids and fairway woods she recommends moving them two balls left of center. She does note, thought, that it is hard to make an exact recommendation without seeing someone’s swing and their release point, but playing 3 ball positions (one for your irons, one for long irons and fairway woods, one for driver) will make things much more simple.
