Simple Drill For A Consistent Golf Swing



Today, we focus on a key difference we see between golf swings of good amateur golfers and @PGATour Professionals. The swing fundamental we are addressing is the plane of the golf club and shaft immediately after impact. Typically, many ‘A’ Grade golfers fall into the trap of exiting the impact zone above plane, in an effort to produce a draw shape to their shots.

If we slow the golf swings down of such great golfers as Jason Day, Tiger Woods or Jim Furyk, we can see that the club and shaft track quite low and left (for right-handed golfers) post impact. However, a large section of club golfers, notably many ‘A’ Graders, typically swing off and above plane after striking the golf ball. This motion directly affects consistency of ball striking, clubface control and golf ball flight. Players are often plagued by hooks and loopy draw shots, big blocks and low spin rates.

There have been many great golfers over the years who have swung with no consideration to swing plane, often producing wild loops in the golf swings. These players still manage to consistently deliver the golf club ‘On Plane’ through the impact area, both before and after impact.

Plenty of information is available on backswings and downswings but not many golf instructors talk about the key position of the club post impact. You would be foolish to believe that this isn’t important, thinking that the golf ball has gone. The fact is golfers are forced to make corrections and compensations to the clubface, when the exit plane is so steep. The hands must release the golf club, producing a ‘flip’ motion, which is inconsistent and unreliable.

Most golf teaching involves an internal focus. Common suggestions might include increased hip turn, a still head or improved hand path. These are all factors of the golf swing, which many golfers and teachers consider important. However, as they are focused internally, on movements of the body, golfers find changes extremely difficult to process.

Enter the world of External Focus of Attention. This means that instead of focusing on body parts, a golfer can and should focus more on the target, the ball, the clubhead – objects which are external to the body. The sciences involving Motor Skill Learning have proven that by employing an External Focus of Attention, sports men and women learn new moves more quickly, retain changes more readily and can perform better under pressure.
