#152 Web TV: Which Is The Best Chipping Stance ?

Which Is The Best Chipping Stance?

Which is the best stance to use when you are actually playing a chip shot?

Today I’m going to show you exactly which stance would be suitable for you to play your chip shots.

How wide your feet need to be and how stable your feet need to be when playing your chip shots.

I’m a big fan of a particular stance with how wide my feet need to be but I’m not going to tell you that one just yet, I’m going to keep you in suspense for that one.

What I do see is that when people get set to do their chip shots, they do tend to set up for a full swing style of stance. Feet wide apart and they get set and then play the shot. Now, look that’s okay to do that, I’m not going no, don’t do that, but it’s not the preferential one to use, simply because your feet are too wide, there’s too much activity happening and you could actually create a lot of power out of the shot and in a chip shot we don’t actually want that.

We actually want to be able to have better control of the ball, especially around the green. It’s a feel shot, you have to be able to caress the ball, it’s a thing where the ball needs to come off the club face softly and controlled.

I do also see a lot of people who have a hip width stance and that’s really good actually, I’m pretty happy with that one. Hip width stance is really good, you have your feet obviously hip width apart and you do your shot. It’s a really nice stable shot, I really like that one.

Also, you will see a lot of people who have a chip shot where they have their feet together.

Which one do you think would be the best one?

All three would be okay. But, the thing is that you need to go and work and fiddle around and do one with your feet shoulder width apart, do one with your hip width apart and then do one with your feet close together and see if you can feel the difference.

The secret to chipping thought is that you want to make sure your feet are really well grounded almost like your shoes can feel the grass under your feet. You have a really stable base and you swing back and through and then hold your position afterwards. When you swing back and through and then hold and you have a nice, really strong, chip shot, in the sense of the ball reacting off the club face well but at the same time you have nice control and it’s also nice and soft.

I’m a big fan of having your feet no more that hip width apart and basically what that really is, is the width of the club head. It just slots in between your feet, that’s about as wide as you need to be.

That’s pretty much all that you need to do, have an experiment, see which one is working for you best, preferably the one that’s hip width apart or feet together (they’re the best two) have a fiddle with it and see which two you like best.

I don’t really recommend the shoulder width apart one, I think there is too much margin for error with your feet too far apart. Have a fiddle with it and see which one works the best for you.

Have an absolutely awesome day, take care, and remember; Tee it high and Let it fly.
