I went from a poor putter to a better than mediocre putter and my scores dropped by an easy 3-4 shots.

Disclaimer: this is a recording of my observations and personal discoveries over a period of months. It is in no way a definitive guide on how to putt. All courses were in Thailand and Malaysia where Bermuda and Paspalum grasses which are very grainy are used.

I made it at this stage because my putting has actually drastically improved. The feeling over the ball is no longer “OMG I don’t know what is going to happen”. I now have a feeling putts are going in. My scores are getting closer to 72 thanks to my conscious effort to understand the greens.

How to putt a golf ball would have been a poor title because it isn’t a how to guide – instead just some recordings of my observations. So I hope you find some value in what I have discovered about an area of golf I ignored all my life – the grainy grass green.

If you play golf on Bent grass, I highly doubt this will be of much assistance. From my 15 years playing on bent in South Africa, I never had to put this much thought into putting and I used to hole a lot more putts.

I’ve worked on my alignment and reading the greens. How to read a golf green is a little more intricate on a tropical grass where grain affects the ball as much as it does. I believe if you can putt well on these grainy grasses, Bent grass is a cinch.
