My name’s Ted Norby, Director of Instruction at the National University Golf Academy. We’re going to talk about putting today and specifically keeping the head steady. We hear all the time about not looking up, you’re moving your head and one of the main reasons we miss putts is we move around too much. Well the reason for this we’re watching the putter head, we’re watching the ball. There’s too much going on down there to watch. So our eyes and our head start moving around. What we want to be doing is thinking more about the target and what’s happening out in front. Just like I’m going to throw a ball some place or toss a ball some place. I’m looking and thinking about my target. Not what’s happening down below. So what happens is we get into this setup position and then as I set up to the ball I start watching the putter back and forth. What a lot of people do to change that is they stare at the ball, pick a piece of the ball or a dimple of the ball. What I want to do is not even look at the ball. I want my eyes, or my brain, thinking about the target, but my eyes are going to be out in front. So after I get set up to the ball and get myself aligned, what I want to do is have my eyes look at the target track my eyes back down to a spot anywhere two to six inches out in front of the ball. You have to figure out what works for you. But as my eyes track back to about four, five inches in front of the ball, I leave my eyes there, then my thought is to roll the ball over that spot. It’s pretty easy to roll a ball over a spot that’s just five inches in front of you, not that difficult. And if I hit that spot it has a chance to go in. And since I’m not looking at the ball or the club head and I’m thinking about what’s happening out in front, everything stays a little bit more steady. So as I setup to the ball, look at my target line, track my eyes, pick a spot in front, and then stroke. And because I’m looking at that spot in front of the ball I’m not watching my putter head or the ball go forward. You’ll stay a lot more steady, hit more solid putts, more putts will go in.
