The 2001 Seniors PGA Championship tournament provided everything a Seniors PGA Tour championship should – great golf and a trip down memory lane. The first days play found golf’s great ‘triumvirate’ of the 1960s, Arnold Palmer,Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player all paying superb golf, and all in close contention behind Jim Thorpe, who shot five-under 67. Palmer in fact shot his age at 71. Highlight of the afternoon was Tom Watson’s straight 5 birdies which started the ball rolling for Tom at Ridgewood country club.
