Hi I’m Justin Hicks. Do you find yourself struggling with your putting in terms of thinking about too many things to do with your mechanics? We’re going to simplify things quite a bit. There are 3 ingredients to being a good putter.

1. The first one is being about to read the putt correctly in terms of which way the green slopes and how much.
2. The other two factors are the distance you hit the ball and …
3. Starting the ball on the correct line.

The first thing I do with my students is I have them put a tee adjacent to the hole where they think the ball needs to start. Then next I’ll use this device here, which is similar to a stint meter, where I can control the direction the ball goes as well as the distance. Now we’ll role a few balls down, just to get a sense of how well they are reading the putt. If they are not reading the putts very well what I’ll have them do is have them move around different directions, different parts of the green so the can read the ball better.

Once they are able to get a pretty good read what I have them do in their routine is make sure when they’re walking in, their eyes are focusing on the tee. That’s going to help with their aim and their alignment and then doing a practice stroke or two while they’re looking there. This will give them the proper feel for how hard to swing the putter. Once it feels right, I walk in there and just try to repeat. Something like that.

I hope this helps your putting and simplifies things quite a bit.
