Many golfers struggle to shallow out their golf swing, often leading to going over the top in the process. Over the top golf swings and missed shots are quite common among novice golfers just becoming acquainted with the sport.

While these situations need be remedied, they are not cause for concern in a player that has just begun training and developing their skills as a golfer.

One of the most crucial elements in relation to shallowing out our golf swing happens during the downswing portion of our swings.

If we are taking an unproductive angle of attack during our downswing, the shot will come off with a high degree of inconsistencies, which will ultimately lead to missed shots overall.

Building consistency in our golf swing will greatly improve our ability to shallow out our shots. Described as shallowing within the highest echelon of the golfing community, this simply means that our golf club flattens our horizontally during our downswing, into impact.

Many players often find that their shots execute from an angle of attack that leads to going over the top, causing a vastly steepened plane during their downswings. The missed shots experienced when producing an over the top shot are often referred to as skinny, topped or fat shots, with most of the flight paths veering violently to the right of our intended target.

Lacking a shallowed angle of attack upon impact with the golf ball can contribute to hitting steep shots and adding a high degree of inconsistency to our overall playing experience.

During our downswing, our swing should move slightly towards the ground which can assist in compressing the golf ball and building precise consistencies in our overall shot production.
