Golf instructor Butch Harmon says if you want to hit the ball closer to the hole, take this advice for your next short approach shot.

Transcript
Here we are about , ah, maybe yards to the flag.
What I see all the time is so many of you
will just take your pitching wedge
and just try and hit it as hard as you can.
It’s impossible to control the trajectory,
the line and the distance when you swing that hard.
So get rid of the pitching wedge.
Let me show you what you want to do.
I’m going to take a nine iron
and I’m going to make more of a three quarter swing.
With your pitching wedge you’d make this long,
full wrist cock swing as hard as you can
just in case you made contact.
By taking the nine iron,
I can make a more three quarter swing,
a softer action and let my arms
and my body rotate together.
I’m gonna get a better ball flight
and better consistency.
Ball’s played a little front of center.
‘Bout a probably just a little three quarter back swing.
And a little punchy feel it.
So the next time you have one of these shots
from about to , don’t get your pitching wedge
and swing as hard as you can.
Take this nine iron, make a little three quarter swing.
You’ll control the shot a lot better.
