AlohaCare Webinar Enlivening A Culture of Health Ep 4 Food and Community Subsistence in Hawai‘i

AlohaCare Webinar Series: Enlivening A Culture of Health — Episode 4: Food and Community Subsistence in Hawai‘i

Access to foods that support healthy eating is a key issue in the Healthy People’s SDOH objectives. However, COVID-19 worsened Hawai‘i’s crippled food system. Food insecurity increased in 2020 with the rise in unemployment, the closure of schools, and disruptions across food systems. One island has come together and responded with human kindness, collaborative solutions, and a shift towards sustainable local food systems. Weaving the island’s rich cultural pathways and legacy of ‘āina momona (abundant land) with responsible, modern sustainability strategies, Sust‘āinable Molokai is restoring abundance through 12 priority areas connecting the land and people across food production, water, transportation, culture, eco-education, and other areas. Their integrated programs like Mobile Market are increasing local food production and nutritional consumption—to promote healthy eating, and to support our local agricultural and food producing community. This “AlohaCare Webinar Series: Enlivening a Culture of Health” welcomes external experts to speak live via Zoom Webinar to AlohaCare departments who work directly and indirectly across clinical and non-clinical areas. Join us to discuss important issues and share success stories from community programs on Moloka‘i related to food security and good health.

Guest Speakers: Harmonee Williams, Christopher O’Brien, Matt Yamashita from Sust‘āinable Molokai
